Autumn 2025 Induction Ceremony：President’s Address

Hello, everyone. Welcome to the Autumn 2025 Shizuoka University Induction Ceremony for undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs. A hearty greeting to you all.

To begin, on behalf of everyone attending this ceremony today, I'd like to offer my sincere congratulations to all of the new students: 17 in the undergraduate program, 41 in the master's program, and 26 in the doctoral program. I also wish to extend my congratulations to your families and to all those who have supported you.

Many students here today have been admitted to undergraduate and graduate courses on various paths, including those in the Asia Bridge Program (ABP). We started this program ten years ago at the request of companies in Shizuoka Prefecture. Many of these firms are expanding throughout Asia, and therefore need talented individuals to act as a bridge with their local employees. These companies have made significant donations to establish scholarship programs that provide financial support to our ABP students. Fortunately, many ABP graduates have found positions at these companies, succeeding as expected.
The ABP has also been indisputably groundbreaking for Shizuoka University, both in the corporate support the program has received from the beginning and the unprecedented, exceptionally diverse educational and research environment it has fostered.

Thanks to the ABP, international students joining the university today will have the opportunity to work alongside Japanese students in both their classes and research activities. I hope you will eagerly interact with the Japanese students around you, make good friendships, and to help further increase Shizuoka University’s diversity.

Unfortunately, 2020 marked the start of roughly three and a half years during which COVID-19 hindered students worldwide from moving freely across borders and building close relationships with people from diverse social and cultural backgrounds through mutual exchange. However, we are now free from the impact of COVID-19 and can once again travel between countries. I sincerely hope that all of you develop various initiatives to create a more equitable and just society for the future of humanity during your time at universities that fully guarantee your educational and research rights.

We are now living in uncertain times, with no clear future ahead of us. Today, you are witnessing a world in which numerous challenges lie ahead—persisting military conflicts across the globe, outbreaks of infectious disease, and other issues whose solutions feel elusive. In times like these, the world eagerly awaits individuals who will boldly confront these difficult problems and discover solutions. I believe you, the students entering Shizuoka University today, are precisely the individuals upon whom such hopes are pinned.

The reality is that addressing the many societal challenges mentioned cannot be achieved by relying solely on isolated specializations. To deal with such difficult problems, we must collaborate across various academic disciplines, transcending our individual specializations. Society looks to us for solutions to the myriad of challenges impacting the modern world, including, for instance, initiatives to address the global climate change which threatens us, measures to correct worldwide social and economic disparities, settlements in various regional conflicts, and countermeasures to potential nuclear threats. Addressing these issues will require going beyond a mono-disciplinary focus towards an interdisciplinary collaboration. In other words, we should seek solutions by mobilizing experts in all of the academic disciplines.

You will advance in your studies and research at Shizuoka University, and during that process, I hope you will challenge yourselves to break down the boundaries between the humanities and the sciences. Naturally, you will depend on your expertise in your research. Still, I hope you will expand your studies to include fields you think are unrelated to your specialties. Even if you are not interested in an academic field and do not think you need to study it now, you will find that you can apply any subject to your specialty once you direct your interest towards it. I believe you must take this approach to learning. Pursuing such efforts should greatly expand the scope of your research and the potential for significant advancements. I sincerely hope that you will use the comprehensive knowledge you cultivate through your studies at Shizuoka University to find clues to solving the global issues which humanity now faces.

At Shizuoka University, you will be free to pursue academic inquiry according to the problems that interest you as well as share the results of your academic and research findings with society. In other words, at Shizuoka University, we value your inquisitive spirit and creative exploration. I encourage you to hone your imagination and creativity here and boldly challenge yourselves to solve many societal issues. I join the faculty and staff in wanting to embrace each of your approaches toward exploring your studies and provide whatever support we can. Do not be passive; actively pursue many challenges. As you follow that advice, cherish your interactions with me and the rest of the faculty and staff, as well as with your friends, acquaintances, and senior students. You will likely encounter various difficulties or feel stuck at times throughout your explorations here. In such times, those around you will surely provide you with sound advice.

You will now live in Japan, at one of our campuses in Hamamatsu or Shizuoka, for several years to come. Naturally, you will live in an environment different from your home country, so you may be be confused by the differences in language, religion, food, or customs. However, I hope that you will relish this opportunity and actively study the Japanese language and culture. Your new home in Shizuoka Prefecture is blessed with natural splendor and a rich history and culture that are fascinating to many people around the globe. I sincerely hope you will lead a vibrant student life in such an excellent environment.

In closing today, I congratulate each of you who has chosen to pursue your academic journey at Shizuoka University.

令和７年度秋季入学式　学長挨拶

皆さん、こんにちは。2025年秋の静岡大学学士課程、修士課程、博士課程入学式にようこそ。皆さんを心より歓迎致します。

最初に、本日この式典にご列席の皆様と共に、学士課程17人、修士課程41人、博士課程26人の入学生の皆さんに心よりお祝いを申し上げます。そして、皆さんのご家族や、これまで皆さんを支えて下さった関係者の方々にも心よりお祝いの言葉をお送りします。

本日、この場にはアジアブリッジプログラム（ABP）により、学士課程及び修士課程に入学された方々やABPプログラム以外で入学された方々の双方がおられます。ABPに関しては、静岡県内の企業の要請を受けて、10年前にこのプログラムを開始しました。静岡県内の企業の多くは、アジア各国に進出し、そこで働く現地の人々との橋渡しをする人材を求めています。そして、これらの企業はABPの学生を経済的に支援するため奨学金制度を創設するために多くの寄附を寄せて下さいました。幸いなことに、このプログラムを終えた卒業生や修了生の多くが実際にこれらの企業に就職し、期待通りの活躍をしています。
ABPは、このプログラムが当初より企業のサポートを受けている点でも、またかつてないほどに多様性に満ちた教育・研究環境をもたらしてくれた点においても、静岡大学にとってはとても画期的なものだと考えています。

本日入学された留学生の皆さんは、これから日本人学生と共に授業や研究活動を通じて相互に交流することになります。私は皆さんが、日本人の学生と積極的に交流し、良い友人関係を築き、静岡大学の一層の多様性の向上に力を貸して下さるようにと願っています。

ところで、2020年から約３年半にわたり、COVID-19の影響で世界中の学生たちが自由に国境を越えて移動し、相互に交流を通して多様な社会的文化的背景を持つ人々と親しい関係を築くことが難しい状況が続きました。しかし、今私たちはCOVID-19の影響から解放され、国境を越えて行き来することが可能になりました。このような時に、私は皆さんが自由な教育研究活動が保障された大学において、私たち人類全体の未来のため、そしてより公平で公正な社会を切り拓くため、様々な活動を展開していただくことを心から願っています。

今、私たちは、先を見通すことができない不透明な時代に生きています。
今日（こんにち）皆さんは、世界各地で続く軍事衝突や感染症の流行など、解決策を見出すことが難しいと感じる課題が沢山横たわっている状況を目にしていることと思います。このような時代状況の中で、世界は解決が困難な問題に果敢に挑戦し、解決策を見つけてくれる人々を待ち望んでいます。本日静岡大学に入学された皆さんは、まさにそのような期待をされた方々だと思います。

すでに申し上げたような多くの社会課題を解決していくためには、一つの専門分野だけで対応することができないというのが現実の姿だろうと思います。そのような難問に立ち向かうため、私たちに求められていることは、個別の専門分野を越えて、様々な学問分野が連携して取り組むことではないでしょうか。例えば、私たちが今、直面している地球規模の気候変動への対応策や多くの地域で起こっている社会的・経済的格差の是正策、また世界のいろいろな地域で生じている紛争の解決策や核の脅威への対応など、これらはすべて私たちが解決を求められている課題だと思います。これらの課題を解決するためには、一つの学問分野を超えて、様々な学問分野の連携、つまりあらゆる学問分野を総動員させて解決の道を探ることが求められるはずです。

これから皆さんは静岡大学で学び、研究を進めていくことになります。私が皆さんに期待したいことは、皆さんが文系や理系の境界を取り払って学ぶことに挑戦してほしいということです。もちろん、皆さんが自身の専門性を生かして研究を進めることは大切ですが、それだけではなく、皆さんの専門とは関係がないと思う分野にも学びの幅を広げて下さい。今は、興味がなく学ぶ必要がないと思う学問分野であっても、関心をもって学び始めると自分の専門分野で活かせることが見つかるということにも気づくはずです。私は皆さんがそのような学びの姿勢を持っていただくことがとても大切だと考えています。そして、そのような取り組みを進めることにより、皆さんの研究の幅が一層広がり、大きく発展していく可能性があると思います。私は、世界が共通で抱える大きな課題に対し、皆さんが静岡大学での学びを通して培う総合的な「知」をもとに、地球規模の課題に対して解決の糸口を見出すような取り組みを進めてくださるようにと心から願っています。

皆さんは静岡大学において、自分の問題関心に沿って自由に学問を探求することができますし、そのような学びや研究を通じて得られた成果を社会に発信することができます。つまり、静岡大学では皆さんの探求心こそが大切にされ、皆さんの創造的な探求に価値が置かれるということです。皆さんがぜひご自身の想像力や創造力を静岡大学において磨き上げていただき、積極的に多くの社会課題解決に挑戦してみて下さい。私たち教職員は皆さん一人一人の物事を探求する姿勢を受け止め、様々な支援をしていきたいと考えています。ぜひ、皆さんは受け身ではなく、積極的に多くの事柄に挑戦してみて下さい。その際、私たち教職員の他に、皆さんの友人・知人や先輩との交流も大切にして下さい。皆さんはこれから物事を探求する際に、いろいろなことに悩んだり、行き詰まったりすることがあると思います。そのような時に彼らはきっと良いアドバイスをしてくれるはずです。

皆さんは、これから日本で、そしてキャンパスのある浜松市や静岡市で数年間暮らすことになります。もちろん、皆さんの母国とは異なる環境の中で生活していかなければなりませんので、言葉や宗教、食べ物、そして慣習などが異なることにより戸惑うことが沢山あるかもしれません。しかし、私は皆さんが、このような機会を楽しんでほしいと思いますし、日本語や日本の文化も積極的に学んでいただくことを期待しています。皆さんがこれから暮らすことになる静岡県は、豊かな自然環境に恵まれ、さらに世界中の多くの人々を魅了する歴史や文化が息づいている場所です。私は、皆さんがこのような優れた環境の中で、生き生きと学生生活を送ることができるように心から願っています。

最後にもう一度、本日静岡大学に入学された皆さん一人一人に心よりのお祝いの言葉を申し上げて、私の挨拶とします。
