President's Speech, Graduation Ceremony 2020 Fall

Let me begin by congratulating all 131 students who are graduating from both of the two campuses of Shizuoka University today. I, along with Trustees, Vice-Presidents, Deans, and Heads of Research Institutes and the University Library here today, and all other faculty members and staff, want to extend our heartfelt congratulations to each of you.

You are getting your degrees in many different fields of specialization. I am genuinely proud and delighted that you have worked so hard, day and night, to hone your skills, learning from and inspiring one another, in all of these fields of study. I hope that this academic qualification will be of great help to you in carving out your careers.

I suppose that today all your families and friends, as well as others around you, must be feeling extremely happy and proud to see your graduation. It is thanks to these people, who have supported you up to now, that you are with us today receiving your degrees.

It is a great pity that because of the Covid-19 epidemic you have not been able to take classes and conduct your research fully for the most part of your last semester. On top of that, some of you might be stranded at airport hotels for self-isolation on the way back to Japan from abroad, or that you could not help but abandon the plan to cross the borders in the first place. Even under these adversities, you have continued to work hard enough to have finished your modules during the days available to you. I really admire all your efforts at this special moment.

Most university professors around the world are now deeply worried about the way Covid-19 would impact university education and research in many respects. On the one hand, with the expansion of online education during this period, we have found the new possibilities of this type of provision of lectures and classes. According to the student survey of Shizuoka University conducted by the end of May this year, some of the online lectures were highly evaluated by students especially in the field of science and engineering, when they are mainly aimed at just conveying the knowledge and ideas of professors unilaterally. Those lectures which had been given in a face-to-face environment, could, and should be replaced by those online.

But on the other hand, the dominance of online education in university campuses due to Covid-19 seems to deprive many students of the opportunities to talk to one another and make close groups and friendships. Especially, for students newly enrolled in April, this situation must be quite disappointing. In addition, in terms of international exchange of students and researchers, Covid-19 has prevented them from moving across the borders and made it much more difficult to foster cooperation and friendship with people around the world. As a matter of fact, quite a few Shizuoka University students who are supposed to study abroad had no choice but to cancel their plans and many international students who have been accepted as our new members from the fall semester find it hard to come to Japan as originally planned.

No one can predict correctly what the universities all around the world will look like in the post-corona era. But I strongly believe that university campuses will continue to be the venue where students and professors enthusiastically exchange their views and create brand new perspectives about a better future for all human beings. Although we are now facing many unprecedented challenges caused by Covid-19, we will eventually overcome them very soon.

Next, let me talk a little bit about the Asia Bridge Program, or, ABP, which many of the international students attending this ceremony belong to. Some of the students here who are getting their Bachelor’s degrees are the second generation of the Asia Bridge Program, or ABP and the majority of the students who are getting their MA today, are the fourth generation of the same program. We started out with this program five years ago, in order to meet the needs of the businesses based in Shizuoka Prefecture, which seek human resources playing a role as a bridge between Japanese companies extending their businesses into Asian countries, and the local people who work for these companies. Those companies also have donated us much money to establish an ABP scholarship scheme, in order to give financial support to some of the students. Fortunately, quite a few graduates of ABP have actually gotten into the companies and are playing vital roles there, as expected.

As part of this ABP, all six faculties have provided pre-sessional Japanese Language courses from October to February for the around 30 ABP undergraduate students who would attend lectures and classes of each of the Faculties beginning from April, given in Japanese on the same basis with students of Japanese background. In addition, the Graduate School of Integrated Science and Technology has introduced a new Master’s module, given in English for the first time, in order to attract international students mainly from the Asian region, and have accepted around 40 students every year.

The Asia Bridge Program has opened a new page for us in that it has been strongly supported by businesses from its beginning, and has brought about more diversified educational and research environments than ever to our university. For most undergraduate students with Japanese language background, it is a fresh experience to talk with students from different cultural backgrounds on an everyday class basis. Especially for many of the Japanese MA students, it’s an unprecedented situation to sit with international students in lectures given in English, share laboratory and discuss their research related issues with them in a foreign language. Although some Japanese students are too shy to communicate with international students and sometimes make them feel isolated, the Japanese students are still inspired very much by this sort of diversified atmosphere. I appreciate ABP students very much for your contribution to giving totally new learning environments to Shizuoka University.

Of course, before starting ABP, we had already accepted quite a few international students in our doctoral course and other various courses. I would also like to give many thanks to those students for your vital roles leading to diversification here in Shizuoka University for a much longer period.

Finally, we, Shizuoka University, as your alma mater, would like to keep in touch with you all for the future. As alumni people, please come to visit us to seek our help, reunion with your friends and colleagues and just for the nostalgia for the past. We always welcome you.

In conclusion, let me once again offer my sincere congratulations to each and every one of you.

令和２年度秋季学位記授与式　学長挨拶

　ご列席の皆様と共に、静岡大学の両キャンパス総勢１３１名の卒業生・修了生に心よりお祝い申し上げます。

　皆さんは様々な専門分野で学位を取得されました。お互いに切磋琢磨しながら積み上げてきた皆さんのこれまでの努力に敬意を表します。またこの学問上の成果が皆さんの将来のキャリアに大いに役立つことを願っています。

　皆さんのご家族や友人、皆さんを支えてきた周囲の人々も、皆さんの卒業・修了を喜び、かつ誇りに思っていることでしょう。今日皆さんがそれぞれの学位を得ることができたのも、これらの方々のおかげに他なりません。

　Covid19の影響で、皆さんが最終学期の授業や研究に十分に携わることができなかったことはたいへん残念です。それに加えて、皆さんのなかには日本への帰国の途上、自己隔離のために空港のホテルで足止めされたり、そもそも国境を越える移動を諦めざるを得なかった人もあったのではないでしょうか。このような状況の下でも皆さんは与えられた時間のなかで、それぞれの課程を終えるべく勉学を続けてきました。この特別な時期の皆さんの努力は賞賛に値するものだと考えます。

　世界中の大学教員は、このCovid19が大学の教育や研究にどのような影響を与えるのかを心配しています。一方では、今回のオンライン教育の拡大によって、このような形での講義や演習の実施が新たな可能性を持っていることがわかりました。5月末までに静岡大学が行なった学生アンケートによれば、特に科学や技術の分野のいくつかのオンライン講義は、それらが主に知識や考え方を一方向的に伝達することを目的としている場合には、学生から高い評価を得ています。これまで対面授業という形で提供されてきたこのタイプの講義は今後オンラインの形に置き換え可能であり、むしろ置き換えられて行くべきものです。

　しかし他方で、Covid19の影響でオンライン授業が支配的になったことは、多くの学生から、お互いに語り合ったり、親しい関係を築いたり、友人を得たりする機会を奪うことにもなっています。特に4月に新しく入学した学生にとっては、このような状況は、極めて残念なものでした。これに加えて国際的な学生や研究者の交流という点で、Covid19は彼／彼女たちが国境を越えて移動することを阻み、世界中の人々との間の協力関係や友情を育むことを難しくしています。実際問題として、海外留学を考えていた多くの静岡大学の学生が留学を断念せざるを得ませんでしたし、10月から静岡大学の一員となるはずであった留学生の多くが、予定通り来日することは困難になっています。

　ポスト・コロナの時代に、世界中の大学がどのようになっているかを予測することは誰にもできません。しかし、大学のキャンパスが、学生と教員が熱心に意見を闘わせ、人類のより良き未来のために新たな展望を見出す場所であり続けることを、私は強く確信しています。現在我々はCovid19によってもたらされた前例のない問題に直面していますが、遠からずこれらの問題を克服する日が来るでしょう。

　次に、この式典に参加している多くの留学生が所属している「アジアブリッジプログラム（ABP）」について、少しお話しします。今日学士号を授与される学生の皆さんのなかには、ABPの第2期生が含まれています。また修士号を授与される学生の皆さんの多くは、同プログラムの第4期生にあたります。私たちは、静岡県内の企業の要請を受けて、このプログラムを5年前に開始しました。これらの企業は、アジア各国に進出した企業とそこで働く現地の人々との間の「橋」としての役割を果たす人材を求めています。これらの企業は、ABPの学生を経済的に支援する奨学金制度を作り出すために多くの寄附を寄せて下さいました。そして幸いなことにABPの卒業生の多くがこれらの企業に就職し、そこで期待通りの重要な役割を果たしています。

　このABPのために、本学の６つの学部のすべてが、4月から他の日本人学生と同じ授業を受講する約30名の学部入学生に対して、10月から2月まで日本語の準備コースを提供してきました。また「総合科学技術研究科」はアジア地域からの留学生を迎え入れるために、はじめて英語のみで学位の取れるコースを設けました。そして毎年約40名の学生が入学しています。

　ABPは、このプログラムが当初から企業のサポートを受けている点でも、またかつてないほど多様性に満ちた教育・研究環境をもたらしてくれた点でも、我々にとって新しい頁を開くものとなりました。多くの日本人学生にとっては、英語で提供される授業で留学生と机を並べたり、研究室を共にしたり、研究について外国語で議論したりすることはこれまで全く未経験でした。日本人学生は恥ずかしがって留学生と話をすることを避け、留学生に寂しい思いをさせることもあったと思いますが、それでもこのような多様性に満ちた雰囲気に刺激されることも多々ありました。ABPの学生に皆さんには、静岡大学にこのような新たな学習環境をもたらして下さったことに対して感謝したいと思います。

　もちろん、我々はすでに博士課程やその他のコースに多くの留学生を受入れてきました。これらの皆さんにも、今後も長く続くであろう静岡大学の多様化に対する貢献に感謝したいと思います。

　最後になりますが、静岡大学は皆さんの母校として、引き続き皆さんと連携して行きたいと考えています。皆さんも卒業生・修了生として、我々の助力を求めるためでも、ただかつての仲間たちと再開するためでも結構ですから、気軽に我々のもとを訪れて下さい。

　今一度、皆さんのひとり一人に心よりお祝いの言葉を申し上げて、私からのご挨拶といたします。
